Howrah Bridge
This
internationally acclaimed cantilever bridge is a sort of synonym in
Kolkata and and is also its greatest asset. Built in 1943 to replace the
earlier Pontoon bridge due to increase in traffic, the bridge connects
the city of Kolkata with its twin city Howarh across the river Hooghly.
There are several fascinating features with this bridge. Riveting
technique is employed in construction of the bridge without any nuts and
bolts, and a whopping 26,500 tons of steel is used to construct this
bridge.
Considered as the 6th longest and one of its kind in the world, it
has since become one of the major tourist sites and is a must in the
itinerary when you visit the city. The view of the Hoogly river is
simply amazing.
The official name of the bridge was changed to Rabindra Setu in 1965
after the great poet Rabindranath Tagore. However the name 'Howrah' is
generally used.
